About the Initiative
In her 2009 State of the State address, Governor Jennifer Granholm presented her vision of a re-designed state government that is better able to meet Michigan's needs and challenges in the 21st century. As part of this vision, the Governor requested that Lieutenant Governor John Cherry lead an initiative to reduce the number of state departments from eighteen to eight. The Governor identified four goals to guide this effort: a government focused on core priorities, enhancing service to citizens, maximizing technology and attracting the next generation of talent.

In response to this charge, the Lieutenant Governor formed an interdisciplinary working group, including academics, members of the legislature, and state employees to shape what they believe to be the seven core functions of state government: Education, Public Safety, Well Being, Public Systems, Sustainability, Economic Growth and Prosperity, and Efficiency and Effectiveness.

To engage the public in the process, Lieutenant Governor Cherry scheduled a number of town hall meetings that give the citizens of Michigan an opportunity to express their views on the core functions of state government. Following a thorough review of feedback from the public and other stakeholder groups, the Lieutenant Governor intends to issue his formal recommendations for streamlining state government in early 2010.

In addition to the town hall meetings, interested citizens can provide input in the feedback form below, by sending comments to the Lieutenant Governor's email address at ltgovcherry@michigan.gov and by calling the Lieutenant Governor's office at 517-373-6800.
