Renewing a State ID Card

You will receive a renewal notice about 45 days before your standard or enhanced state ID card expires. You may renew your ID up to six months early at any Secretary of State office if you are unable to renew it by mail or on time for any reason.

If your Social Security number has not been verified by the Department of State, you will be asked to provide proof of a valid Social Security number.  If you are applying for a standard state ID card and do not have a Social Security number, you must present a letter of ineligibility from the Social Security Administration and proof of legal presence.

Renewing by Mail

  1. Fill out and sign the renewal notice
  2. Update your address in the space provided
  3. Pay by check, money order, Discover, Visa or MasterCard
  4. Mail at least three weeks before your state ID card expires

Renewing at a Secretary of State Office

  1. Visit any Secretary of State office
  2. Present your state ID card or other acceptable identification
  3. Present proof of your Social Security number or a letter of ineligibility from the Social Security Administration.
  4. Pay the renewal fee. All branch offices accept cash, check and money orders. PLUS offices and SUPER!Centers accept Discover and MasterCard at the counter.

All documentation is subject to Department of State approval. In some cases, document approval may not occur in the same day and may require an additional visit.

Your renewed standard or enhanced state ID card is valid for up to four years and should arrive in the mail within two to three weeks.

Name Changes
You may process a name change when renewing your valid state ID card at a branch office.  Present it with proof of the name change, which must be established through an official record, such as a certified marriage license, divorce decree or a legal name change document.  A fee will be charged to correct your name and a new photograph will be taken.
