To whom do I report a gasoline quality, quantity or false advertising complaint?

The Michigan Department of Agriculture Laboratory Division's Consumer Protection Section maintains a consumer complaint toll-free hotline number to receive consumer complaints regarding fuel.  The number is 1-800-MDA-FUEL (1-800-632-3835).  This hotline number is available 24 hours a day and is designed specifically to handle gasoline quality or quantity complaints as well as false advertising of gasoline price complaints being lodged against retail gas stations.

The hotline number leads the caller through a series of questions regarding their gasoline purchase so an investigation of the location/station can be made.  When calling this number, be prepared with the following information:

  • Your Name
  • Your Address
  • Your Daytime Phone Number
  • Gas Station's Name
  • Gas Station's Address—Please give sufficient information to enable the investigator to locate the station.
  • Purchase Date
  • Purchase Time
  • Pump Number—If there is no number on the pump, directional information is also helpful.  i.e. Northwest pump.
  • Grade of Gasoline
  • Details of Complaint

After each entry, the caller is prompted to press the # key.

At the end of the call, the caller needs to wait until the tone sounds and then press the # key in order to save the complaint.

The Michigan Department of Agriculture is responsible for enforcement of motor fuel quality and quantity standards established by the Michigan Motor Fuels Quality Act, Public Act 44 of 1984, as amended, and the Michigan Weights and Measures Act, Public Act 283 or 1964, as amended.
