Unemployed Workers Can Claim Benefits Although State Offices Closed on Election Day and Veterans Day

Contact:  Mario Morrow 517-373-9280
Agency: Unemployment Insurance Agency

November 2, 2012 -- Although the State of Michigan's Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA) will be closed on Tuesday, November 6, for Election Day, and Monday, November 12, to observe the Veteran's Day Holiday, unemployed workers can still contact the Agency's automated Michigan Automated Response Voice Interactive Network (MARVIN) system to claim their eligibility for unemployment benefits.

Unemployed workers claiming benefits in Michigan must contact MARVIN by telephone or online once every two weeks to certify that they are unemployed and meet the eligibility requirements for unemployment benefits. Because of the upcoming state holidays, there may be a one- or two-day delay before the benefits are either directly deposited into the bank accounts or loaded onto the debit cards of unemployed workers. Veterans Day is observed by state and federal government and most financial institutions.

Individuals who contact MARVIN by telephone must do so during specific times according to a Monday through Wednesday schedule based on the last two digits of their Social Security numbers or anytime on Thursday or Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. and on most Saturdays between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. MARVIN can be reached toll-free at 1-866-638-3993.

MARVIN is available online at www.michigan.gov/uia  to those with a free online web account anytime during their reporting week from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, and from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on most Saturdays.

Bi-weekly certification through MARVIN Online is just one of many services available to users through the Claim Web Account Manager (CWAM), UIA's online portal that gives users direct access to their account. Claimants are encouraged to use CWAM, which not only provides them access to their account information, but reduces wait times on hold by phone, and also allows them to get answers to questions online from the Virtual Problem Resolution (ViPR) team.
