Future Historians

Ages 9 through 15

Be a history detective!

Photo of Future Historians

At the end of the year, Future Historians enjoyed a special evening at the Michigan Historical Museum, featuring a flashlight tour led by costumed docents and staff, a potluck supper and a t-shirt signing

Join the Future Historians Club, an after-school program at the Michigan Historical Museum. This very hands-on program is designed around the child's interest in history. Students learn to be history detectives by conducting oral interviews, reading primary documents and exploring the museum's exhibits.

The Future Historians group meets biweekly from September through May; topics change with every meeting. The group meets in the Museum Education Room, on the first floor of the Michigan Historical Museum. Meetings run from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.

Certain meeting attendance may be required for participation in the year-end event. During the past several years, Future Historians members have camped overnight at the Michigan Historical Museum, taken a ride on the Michigan Princess and designed the museum exhibit "This Takes Forever!".

Future Historians Say:

"My favorite meeting was when we learned the importance of the Michigan Civil War Battle Flag Collection, then we got to see some of the flags in the back room of the Museum."

—Matthew, 12

"I especially liked the tin punching activity when we made our own nutmeg grater."

—Clare, 8

"I liked making a model of the Standard Rock Lighthouse and meeting someone whose great- grandmother was a Michigan Lighthouse keeper."

—Marilyn, 11
