Transportation accounts for 74.3% of Michigan's oil consumption and is the major source of air pollution. New transportation technologies have improved the efficiency and emissions of vehicles using petroleum-based fuels, and provided cleaner-burning alternative fuels.

The Energy Office participates in several public-private sector partnerships that promote the use of alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs) for on and off road use. One of these is through the U.S. Department of Energy's (U.S. DOE's) Clean Cities Program, designed to advance the nation's economic, environmental, and energy security. Clean Cities supports local decisions to adopt practices that contribute to the reduction of petroleum consumption through public/private partnerships to promote alternative fuels and vehicles, fuel blends, fuel economy, hybrid vehicles, and idle reduction. The Energy Office also provides consumer information to encourage more efficient use of petroleum-based transportation.
