More Than 100 Businesses Holding a Liquor License Pass Controlled Buys

Contact:  Andrea Miller 517-322-5898
Agency: Energy, Labor & Economic Growth

Lansing, MI (November 12, 2009)-More than 100 Michigan liquor licensees passed controlled buys in September as part of controlled buy sting operations by the Michigan Liquor Control Commission (MLCC) and law enforcement agencies. Law enforcement agencies are not required to report passed decoy operations, however some have voluntarily reported the 108 businesses listed below for recognition by the MLCC.

Under Michigan law all licensees have an equal chance of being randomly selected for a minor decoy compliance check. A business can also be selected for a compliance check if there is a documented complaint of sales to minors.

"This is our way of patting our licensees on the back for a job well done," said Nida Samona, Chairperson of the MLCC. "The licensee or clerk should always check the identification of a person who appears less than 40 years old. One of our concerns is the use of false ID, which has become a serious problem for the MLCC, retail licensees and their employees. Minors attempting to purchase alcoholic beverages sometimes use IDs that are altered, counterfeit, or belong to someone else."

The Commission and law enforcement agencies perform the minor sales checks in an effort to reduce drinking by minors, which is a serious problem throughout the state. The MLCC tests about 2,000 licensed establishments each year.
